Two sailboats in Santa Cruz broke free of their moorings in bad weather over the weekend, fire officials said.

At 11:15 p.m. on Friday, the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to reports that the sailboats were loose and battering against the wharf near West Cliff Drive, fire officials said.

The swell was around 10 feet and winds were blowing at around 35 mph, preventing salvage officials from taking any immediate action.

No one was onboard the two vessels, which could not be secured in the storm surge.

The sailboats had washed ashore on to local beaches by Saturday morning, officials said.

Safety fencing has been installed around the beached boats to prevent the public from climbing onboard until they can be fully dismantled and removed, which is scheduled to take place Monday.

No hazardous materials or spills were detected.

One was arrested during a largely peaceful anti-police march through downtown Oakland Saturday night, police said.

Oakland police said around 60 people gathered in Frank Ogawa Plaza at 8 p.m. for a march that circled through downtown Oakland between 9 and 11:30 p.m.

One protester was arrested when the demonstrator blocked the roadway with garbage, police said.

An announcement of the march posted to Facebook had suggested protesters might target police and media property, and set fires in the streets.

The march was the third weekly anti-police march organized by some Occupy Oakland demonstrators in response to what they call ongoing harassment by Oakland police.

Organizers have said that the anti-police marches would be a weekly event on Saturday nights.

Last week, two were arrested during a largely peaceful march. On Jan. 7, six were arrested in clashes with police for a variety of charges including vandalism, assaulting police officers and possession of explosives.

Six were injured when a shootout broke out at a sweet sixteen party in Antioch on Saturday night, police said.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 5000 block of Wilmont Court shortly after 10:30 p.m.

The calls indicated that there were 70 to 80 people at the residence and many had run away.

Police arrived to find a sweet sixteen party thrown at the residence had ended in violence when an argument broke out between some of the 30 or 40 partygoers in the house's garage.

Numerous shots were fired from multiple guns, and a total of six were injured with graze wounds, possibly broken leg and an abdomen wound.

Among the injured were a 13-year old Antioch resident, a 21-year-old Antioch resident, an 18 year-old Antioch resident, two 16-year old Antioch residents, and an 18-year-old Brentwood resident.

All six were transported to local hospitals, some by ambulance and others by helicopter. Some have been released from the hospital while others required more intense care and surgery.

Antioch police are investigating the incident, and received assistance at the crime scene from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office, Pittsburg police and Brentwood police.

Wet and windy winter storms swept across California, leaving thousands without power and slamming Yosemite National Park with strong winds that toppled a tree and killed a park employee.

A branch of the huge tree fell and killed Ryan Hiller Saturday as the 27-year-old from North Carolina lay in his tent cabin in an employee housing area, park spokesman Scott Gediman said.

Hiller, of Chapel Hill, N.C., had worked as a park ranger during busy periods for about five years. He was working for a park concessioner and staying in the Yosemite Valley stable complex while waiting for the winter ski season.

Gediman said Hiller as a ranger worked in the Yosemite wilderness and at the park's famed Half Dome mountain, where he often helped in search-and-rescue efforts. "He was a very skilled ranger," Gediman said. "It's a horrible, horrible thing."

Winds knocked down many large trees at the park, but no other injuries have been reported, Gediman said.

The storm caused minor flooding in Northern California and another front was likely to bring rainfall to the San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship game against the New York Giants on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds from another storm system in the south, downed power lines and poles in Santa Barbara and desert cities like Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Joshua Tree, leaving about 25,000 customers without electricity, with many expected to remain without power through the night, Southern California Edison said in a statement.

In the Los Angeles area, less than an inch of rain fell in downtown Los Angeles but slightly more was reported in the surrounding mountains and along the beaches. The California Highway Patrol blamed the weather for a sharp increase in crashes on Los Angeles County freeways. Officers investigated 315 wrecks by 9 a.m., up from the 55 wrecks reported on dry roadways during the same period last weekend.

Multi-car wrecks closed lanes on several roadways, including the high-traffic Pasadena Freeway north of downtown Los Angeles where a crash injured three people.

Near San Diego, play was suspended at the PGA Tour's Humana Challenge in La Quinta after winds damaged all three courses where the tournament is played. Gusts of 35 mph knocked over a large scoreboard, wrecked an awning in the spectator area and sent golf balls off the greens.

No one was injured, and the tournament was scheduled to resume early Sunday.

Winds were even stronger in the mountains and deserts of San Diego County, where winds in excess of 60 mph were reported, including a gust of 74 mph in Borrego Springs, the weather service said. Similar gusts were reported in the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County, where gusts kicked up dust that made for zero visibility at times in the city of Lancaster.

Forecasters said a second storm accompanied by a cold front will sweep through Southern California late Sunday into early Monday. Further north, a winter weather advisory remained in effect for towns near Eureka and in the northern Sierras.

More significant snowfall was expected in the central and southern Sierras, with up to two feet of snow expected between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon. The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area resort received "long awaited and much needed" snow between Friday night and Saturday morning, when 17 inches fell, spokeswoman Joani Lynch said.
