Mexican national suspected in arsons arrested

Authorities say a Mexican national suspected of setting a series of fires across Southern California was arrested in San Diego County while trying to enter the country illegally. The Border Patrol said Friday that an agent discovered Juan Silva-Lomeli and two other men hiding in desert brush near the border in Campo Wednesday.

Farmers sue after lands flood in river restoration

Central Valley farmers whose land flooded when the San Joaquin River was restored are seeking compensation from the federal government. The Wolfsen Land & Cattle Co. and several other farmers filed a lawsuit on Thursday against federal officials in the U.S. Court of Claims in Washington, D.C. They say new flows in the river have eroded and seeped into their fields east of Los Banos.

SoCal mom, boyfriend to be tried in boy's death

A Corona mother and her boyfriend will stand trial for allegedly killing her toddler and making up a story about his disappearance. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Craig Riemer has ordered Belinda Magana and Naresh Narine to be tried on one count each of murder, torture and assault.

Berkeley man pleads not guilty in apartment attack

A 22-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in connection with three attacks on women at an apartment complex in Walnut Creek. Antonio Mouton entered his plea to one count of rape, two counts of attempted rape and three counts of residential burglary on Thursday in a Contra Costa County courtroom.

3Par calls HP $30 bid `superior'; Dell mulls reply

Data storage company 3Par Inc. says its board has determined that Hewlett-Packard Co.'s $2 billion, $30-per-share takeover bid is superior to a rival offer from Dell Inc., but Dell said Saturday it was mulling over a higher bid. 3Par said late Friday that it told Dell of its intention to terminate its previous deal for $27 per share after three business days and after satisfying other conditions of its deal with Dell.

Fremont officer critical after shooting

Authorities say a Fremont police officer was in critical condition after he was shot multiple times while trying to serve a warrant. The officer, a six-year veteran of the force who has not been identified, underwent surgery at Highland Hospital in Oakland late Friday.

Huge verdict shakes up nursing home industry

During Cindy Cool's almost daily visits to the nursing home, she would routinely find her Alzheimer's-suffering father wearing urine-soaked clothes. The Blue Lake, Calif. resident said it would take upwards of 20 minutes for the apparently short-handed staff of Eureka Healthcare and Rehabilitation to respond and help Cool clean her father. Other patients fared worse, she said.
