Federal and local authorities are investigating a fiery attack on the Planned Parenthood clinic in Madera that damaged the property. Madera police say someone threw a makeshift explosive through the clinic's window early Thursday morning and set off the security alarm.

Fiorina backs delaying Calif. global warming law

Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina on Friday endorsed an oil-company funded ballot initiative that seeks to indefinitely delay California's landmark global warming law. Witness recants statements in Anna Nicole case

A South Carolina man whose family became involved with Anna Nicole Smith has recanted statements critical of the former model's lawyer-boyfriend Howard K. Stern. Ford Shelley testified Friday in Los Angeles that he never saw Smith abuse drugs, never saw Stern force medication on her and believes Stern shouldn't be on trial. Shelley had previously been critical of Stern and suggested to investigators that he over medicated her.

San Diego County fire is 42 percent contained

Authorities say a 719-acre fire in rural San Diego County fire is 42 percent contained and should be fully contained on Sunday. The fire between Campo and Potrero, about 50 miles east of San Diego, started around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief Nick Schuler says the cause is still under investigation.

UC Irvine upholds suspension of Muslim group

The University of California, Irvine has upheld its decision to suspend a campus Muslim group after some of its members disrupted a speech by the Israeli ambassador at a campus event. The university said Friday it will lift the Muslim Student Union's suspension Dec. 31 instead of enforcing it for a full year. However, the group will be on probation for two years instead of one and members must complete 100 hours of community service.

Calif. Assembly limits media recording of sessions

The state Assembly has begun enforcing a long-forgotten rule that constrains media coverage of legislative debates by prohibiting audio or video recorders without permission. The rule requires reporters, television stations and even lawmakers themselves to receive advance permission from the Assembly speaker's office before recording or videotaping Assembly sessions. The state Senate does not have a similar rule.
