Protesters damage Calif. university leader's home

Eight people were under arrest Saturday after protesters broke windows, lights and planters outside the home of the chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley. University spokesman Dan Mogulof said 40 to 70 protesters also threw incendiary devices at police cars and the home of Chancellor Robert Birgeneau about 11 p.m. Friday. There were no fires or injuries.

No. 15 Georgetown beats No. 17 Washington 74-66

Julian Vaughn scored a career-high 18 points, and No. 15 Georgetown pulled away in the second half for its second victory over a ranked opponent in five days, beating No. 17 Washington 74-66 on Saturday in the Wooden Classic. Greg Monroe had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas (8-0), who scored 12 straight points after halftime during a 21-2 run. The impressive surge abruptly blew open a previously tight game in the annual doubleheader held to honor John Wooden, UCLA's famed 99-year-old coach.

Goethals, Verzbicas win national titles

Megan Goethals outleaned Chelsey Sveinsson at the finish to win the girls' race and Lukas Verzbicas became the first sophomore to win the boys' event at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Sveinsson pulled away to a 15-meter lead over Goethals with about 800 meters left. But Goethals began cutting into the lead as the two ran down the final straightaway. The senior from Rochester (Mich.) High narrowly passed the faltering Sveinsson, who fell at the finish line.

Panel faults Marine for response to Iraq killings

A military panel found that a Marine officer displayed substandard performance in his response to the deaths of 24 Iraqis but said he should maintain his rank. The Board of Inquiry's recommendation is a mixed result for Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani, 43, who was accused of failing to investigate the November 2005 killings in the town of Haditha. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus must decide whether to accept the finding or order Chessani retired at a lesser rank.

Husband suspected in death of Chula Vista woman

San Diego County authorities say a 28-year-old pregnant woman was stabbed to death on her doorstep in front of her two young sons, and her estranged husband is the main suspect. Chula Vista police Lt. Roxana Kennedy says Maribel Arteaga was stabbed with a long knife Thursday when she answered a knock at the door of her apartment.

Flood watch issued for burn areas in and around LA

Forecasters have posted a flash flood watch for parts of Southern California because of moderate-to-heavy showers and thunderstorms heading ashore. The National Weather Service says rain could fall at rates up to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall per hour through early Sunday. Forecasters say that could bring a threat of flash floods and debris flows in areas that have been burned by wildfire.
