Sun Bowl is a reunion for Stanford's Beeler

Just a few days before Stanford received an invitation to play Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl, Cardinal center Chase Beeler almost left his room in a Sooners T-shirt. Called out by a teammate, Beeler quickly put on a sweatshirt to hide the infraction. Beeler should be forgiven for his fashion faux pas, considering he grew up immersed in Oklahoma football and spent one season with the Sooners before transferring to Stanford.

Crews race to shore up crumbling Calif. cliff

Construction crews worked Friday to shore up a Northern California bluff where a seaside apartment building was at risk of sliding into the ocean. The 12-unit building in Pacifica has been evacuated and now stands about 10 feet from the edge of the cliff.

Verizon Wireless to FCC: smart phones more costly

Verizon Wireless says it started charging customers more to break service contracts for smart phones because those devices cost much more. Verizon says the difference between what it pays manufacturers for phones and what it charges contract customers is more than twice as large for "smart" phones as it is for standard cell phones.

Padres to wear retro unis for home Thursday games

The Padres are breaking out their retro mustard-and-mud look for home Thursday afternoon games next season. Team president Tom Garfinkel says the Padres will wear replica uniforms from 1978 for their six scheduled Thursday day games at Petco Park. Garfinkel expects the team to wear white jerseys with brown sleeves and yellow trim, and white pants.

Authorities say a 19-year-old driver who plowed into a minivan, killing a family of four, did not have alcohol in his system at the time of the crash. California Highway Patrol officials also said Thursday they had found no evidence that Steven Culbertson had been at a bar prior to the Nov. 29 crash, despite initial reports he had been seen at one.
