Widespread concern exists that American news media, the nation’s tradition of a free press, and the First Amendment itself is under their most serious attack in more than a generation.
Many voices, though, are calling for calm and context, saying without that, destructive overreaction is more likely.
An informed, thoughtful assessment of the situation is needed.
That is why one of country’s longest-standing university journalism departments is bringing together a distinguished panel of experts and a lively audience to begin that work. The department invites its alumni to bring light, context and understanding to what many see as an assault on very foundations of democracy, but others say is a counterproductive response to political themes that have played out over and over throughout U.S. history.
